The Ford Ranger is one of the most anticipated pickup truck returns to date! Since 2011, Ford has worked on building a better, more capable and overall tougher truck that would outperform its biggest competitor, the Toyota Tacoma. Like the Tacoma, the Ranger has grown from a compact to a midsize pickup to respond to the increased demand for midsize trucks. But what sets the new Ranger apart from its competitors and does it really live up to its expectations? To get a better idea, lets see how it compares to the 2019 Toyota Tacoma!
With the RWD option, the 2019 Ranger is estimated to achieve 21 miles per gallon in the city, 26 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg in combined driving. The 4WD option is capable of 20mpg/24mpg/22mpg respectfully.
When comparing that to the 4-cylinder 2019 Toyota Tacoma, the Tacoma falls short with 19/23/21mpg combined with an automatic and RWD, and drops even further with 4WD and/or the manual transmission.
While many will use these trucks as daily drivers, both come with available off-roading capabilities.
The 2019 Ranger has an optional FX4 Off-Road package that adds off-road monotube shocks, off-terrain tires, an electronic locking rear differential, an exposed steel front bash plate, and a heavy duty front skid plate. It also includes a terrain management system and trail control, which is designed to manage throttle and braking at each individual wheel.
The Tacoma's crawl control is almost identical to Ford's trail control, and the multi-terrain select is similar to Ford's terrain management system. The Tacoma also offers a multi-terrain monitor, which shows you what is underneath the truck.
Ultimately, the off-road capabilities are pretty even between the Tacoma and the Ranger.
If you compare the Ranger’s EcoBoost to the Tacoma’s V6 engine, the Ranger’s EcoBoost comes out ahead without doubt. More horsepower, more torque, and better fuel economy.
In terms of drivetrains, the Tacoma offers more choice with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, however, the Ranger's ten-speed is a fantastic transmission.
Lastly, the Ranger is the undisputed winner in terms of towing. It offers a potential of 7,500 lbs of towing on every model, more than double of what Tacoma SR package can do. Even the Tacoma TRD Off-Road can only tow 6,400 lbs.
The base Tacoma SR Access Cab is more expensive than the base Ranger XL SuperCab. Though the Tacoma offers more technology features, it comes at a cost of a vastly inferior engine and less towing capabilities. Therefore, if Technology is not your first priority, the Ranger offers better value in every category!
