Ford provides two unique engines for the 2017 Super Duty. First is a 6.2-litre flex-fuel V-8, which puts out big torque and can handle sizable loads. It's rated at 385 horsepower and 430 lb.-ft. of torque. Live-drive power takeoff with the mobile mode is also available. Delivery of power is impressively smooth, thanks to the TorqShift G 6-speed transmission that goes with F-250 models.
Even more rugged is the 6.7-litre Power Stroke turbo diesel V-8 engine. It powers out 440 horsepower and 925 lb.-ft. of torque. That output is amazing, made possible by a unique configuration. The turbocharger sits between the two cylinder heads, with the inboard exhaust manifold close. Instead of a cast iron engine block, Ford uses a compact graphite iron.
Towing and Hauling
When it comes to towing, the Ford Super Duty is a real champion. The stronger full boxed steel frame, beefier suspension, rugged axle and hardened driveline components combine with the solid powertrains for wondrous results. When properly equipped, the truck can pull up to 21,000 lbs. (9,525 kg).
Using the 5th wheel, that figure rises to 27,500 lbs. (12,474 kg). Adding a gooseneck connection increases it further to 32,500 lbs. (14,742 kg).
Thanks to the use of advanced materials, Ford shed 350 lbs. from the new Super Duty. This factor, combined with a frame that's 24 times stiffer, results in a maximum payload of 7,630 lbs. (3,461 kg). Enhancing this capability are a number of features, like the BoxLink system that accommodates all kinds of aftermarket add-ons for the bed.
You can also get a camera that's embedded in the center high-mounted third stop lamp. When traveling down the road, drivers can switch the camera on and check loads, instead of risking turning around.
To help secure the bed, a remote tailgate release and power lock are available. You can also add a tailgate step to make getting into the box easier.
One of the best things about the 2017 Super Duty is it can be outfitted with technologies to boost safety and productivity. For example, you can get 180-degree or 360-degree cameras to help with spotting obstacles, people, and other vehicles near the truck.
Upgrading to the Sync 3 system means getting the latest hardware and software, so you can swipe and pinch on the touchscreen. The voice controls are more intuitive than other, and responsiveness is also dialed up. Siri integration helps you access features on your connected smartphone while on the go, while automatic updates over WiFi keep the system running smoothly.
